Lemmink\u00e4inen is the young hero of Kalevala, a proud and courageous soldier. The different phases of Lemmink\u00e4inen’s story comprise an essential part of The Kalevala, the national epic of Finland. The story is based on Lemmink\u00e4inen\u2019s hymn, which was once sung by Juhana Kainulainen, a peasant living in the village of Hummovaara in Kes\u00e4lahti (currently a part of the town of Kitee). In 1828, Elias L\u00f6nnrot wrote down the hymn during his first journey to Karelia to gather poems. The story was a basis for the dramatic tale of Lemmink\u00e4inen in The Kalevala.
